Window Air Conditioners Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is a Window Air Conditioner?
A: A window air conditioner is an air conditioner that fits directly into a window and usually cools off just one or two rooms. For smaller homes or if you need to cool off only one room, many people find that these types of air conditioners are more economical, saving you energy and money.
Q: Is it difficult to install window air conditioners?
A: No, as long as you take a few minutes to plan how you will install the unit before you get to work. It's best to put the air conditioner in a shaded area, or plant trees and shrubs around the back of the air conditioner to keep it in the shade. Ask a friend or family member to help you install the unit to prevent any kind of interior damage to it. All of our air conditioners come with thorough directions, so you shouldn't have trouble setting it up.
Q: What size do I need?
A: Measuring the size of the room is very important in determining what type of air conditioner you need. For a room that measures about 200 square feet, we recommend a 7, 000 BTUs unit like the
LG Window Air Conditioner. Add about another 1, 000 BTUs for every additional one hundred square feet.
Q: If my room is partially shaded, do I really need a window air conditioner with a high BTU?
A: It depends on how cool you want the room to be. If the room is in the shade during the warmest hours of the day, you can probably get a unit with a lower amount of BTUs. Conversely, if the room is completely in the sun throughout the day, be sure to get an air conditioner with a high amount of BTUs in relation to the size of the room. You don't want to be sitting in the heat all day!
Q: I've heard some air conditioners have an Energy Efficiency Ratio and come with an ENERGY STAR label. What do they mean?
A: These ratings were established so that you will know you are buying an air conditioner that won't waste energy and empty your wallet when your energy bills come around. The higher the Energy Efficiency Ratio, the more efficient your air conditioner is. All of our
LG Window Air Conditioners have a high Energy Efficiency Ratio (E.E.R.), saving you money in the long run. Our units also have an ENERGY STAR rating, meaning that you can be sure that you are choosing an energy efficient air conditioner. ENERGY STAR air conditioners can save you about $3 per square foot throughout the lifetime of the unit.
Q: What setting should I keep the unit on?
A: Keeping your window air conditioner set to "Auto" will save you even more energy. When the unit senses that the temperature in the room is rising, it will automatically turn on. Otherwise, simply set the controls to the temperature you are comfortable at.
Q: Do I have to remove the unit in the winter?
A: Our LG window air conditioners are expertly crafted to ensure a tight fit between the unit and your window. Yet, since these units do fit directly into your window, they can create small drafts. We suggest taking about fifteen minutes at the end of summer to remove your window air conditioners.
Q: Is there any routine maintenance I need to do on my unit?
A: Yes. Keeping your filter clean is one of the best ways to save energy. We suggest changing your air conditioner's filter every three to six months. The filter you decide to use is ultimately your own decision, and many of our window air conditioners come with slide out filters.
